Real Prayers, Real Families
Prayer brings about miracles we may only dream of - Rick and Brigitte Obel swear by it.
Rick and Brigitte’s first grandson received all kinds of in-utero diagnoses that would prove difficult to overcome: his skull wasn’t closing as it should and his heart had numerous holes that would need extensive treatment to fix - assuming he survived as long. They submitted prayers to the Family Rosary Across America in the hopes that their first grandson would grow and thrive, even recover from these early issues.
Fr. Rocky prayed for Baby Bart on two separate occasions before he was born. He was born perfectly healthy during a broadcast of the Family Rosary of America!
Saved by Divine Mercy
After being discovered face-down and unresponsive in a pond, two-year-old Logan coming back from his accident seemed very unlikely. His mother called into the Divine Mercy Chaplet and had her prayers lifted both there and with the prayer warriors of the Family Rosary Across America.
Logan woke up with no lasting issues, was flown to Mayo Clinic, and his cardiologist is submitting the incredible story of his miraculous recovery to the American Heart Association.
The Memorare Moment
After a 405-day Rosary Novena with the Family Rosary Across America and 460,426,921 Memorares prayed by listeners and on air every hour, June 24th saw the miraculous and truly unexpected overturn of Roe vs. Wade. Listeners celebrated the ruling with praise to God with the start of a new chapter for pro-life America. Our prayers have continued for each state and its legislators, that we will truly see the end to abortion in the United States.
“Saying prayers of thanksgiving for this. The power of prayer is beyond powerful. God has heard us and blessed us with this historical vote.” - Jeanne
“Thank you for this long-awaited news. We have worked so hard for so long and are so pleased. Bless you, Father, for all you do in the name of our Dear Lord Jesus - and how about this decision coming down on this beautiful Feast Day! God is truly in command.” - Patricia
“Bravo!! A day I thought I would never see come true. I really want to uplift Relevant Radio for the outstanding prayers they have prayed daily. Yes, prayers are answered.” - Mary
All Ages
As we strive to embody the values of the New Evangelization, we serve listeners of all ages with encouraging, educational, and exciting content - especially through The Merry Beggars and their newest production, On the Night Train! Families with children of all ages have downloaded and enjoyed this 21-episode mystery on the rails, from Chicago to Sacramento.
“I’m over 80 and when I’m sick and can’t go to church, I can still attend Sunday Mass online thanks to Relevant Radio.” - Ann
“My sister (7) and I (11) love listening to Lenten Lessons! We learn a lot.” - Catherine
With no internet, Judy in Minnesota calls Relevant Radio her “lifeline to the everyday,” her primary news outlet and formation in her faith. She is grateful for the opportunity to stay connected through her radio!
"I am an adult with adult children. I have been listening to [On the Night Train] all on my own. I simply love it! I hope that you continue this ministry for families and kids. I have listened to ‘A Christmas Carol’ before but I am going to listen to your version as well. Thank you! I also didn't know about the radio station because we don't have one here. But I am going to listen to that as well.” - Jaimie
All Walks of Faith
Not Catholic? No problem at Relevant Radio! Many listeners from all over America come from a variety of Christian and Jewish backgrounds with a curiosity about what the Roman Catholic Church believes.
“I’m not Catholic, but one day – I don’t know how – my car was turned on to Drew Mariani’s show while he was doing the Divine Mercy Chaplet. I could feel the love of the Father coming through the radio!” - Jason, FL
“From a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints… Today my commute to work was very long due to an accident on the freeway. I decided to flip through AM radio channels and stumbled on AM 930, Los Angeles - when I tuned in, there was a caller inquiring about Mormons. I was very surprised, and pleased, how well Patrick Madrid explained Joseph Smith's first vision and the surrounding events. While Patrick may not believe the account, I appreciate that he related it in a cordial and respectful way. I also admire Patrick's final words in the conversation about kindness going a long way. Thank you for the good work you are doing.” - Jared, CA
“You have brought a true understanding of my role here on earth. You have opened up my eyes to Christ Jesus and my Catholic roots. I called in many months ago hurt and let down by many Catholic priests and nuns in the past. I used my pain as a crutch to not be Catholic. You were very calm and understanding to my pain. On that day I did not feel your response was adequate to the pain I was experiencing, but you brought it back to me and my responsibility to GOD. I didn’t get it. I now do. I understand my whole purpose here on earth is not to people, but to God and Christ Jesus through people. I have slowly come back to loving the Catholic Church. Most importantly I have grown closer to God. Thank you….. no words can express my gratitude to you and the work you do.” - Elizabeth, Chicago IL
All Over the World
Relevant Radio welcomes listeners not only throughout our nation, but our globe! The free mobile app has been downloaded and utilized in 199 countries, and listeners write in from all over.
“The [overturning of Roe v. Wade] has filled my heart with great joy. Thank you for the work. For sure God hears prayers. I have been praying with you for many years now. I will still pray with you. With lots of love from Kenya.” - Janet
“I would like to thank all the presenters of this Radio. We are also your listeners here in Central Africa. We do appreciate the good work you're doing for God's people.” - Sr. Maria Assumpta, the Congregation of the Good Samaritan Sisters, Uganda.
“Hi! I am a fond listener of your radio, even though I am living in the south of France.” - Pierre
“I am from New Zealand, but my family and I are living in Geneva, Switzerland. I started listening to your podcasts during my morning runs when the pandemic broke out and we were largely confined. There is a certain type of isolation that comes from living in a foreign country, I think it’s true to say the pandemic really did have a further isolating effect. Not only did your shows keep me sane, but I have also indeed learned quite a lot along the way. Beyond the intellectual stimulation, your circuitous navigation through topics has also kept me chuckling to myself. Your show has opened my eyes to the value that comes from looking deeper into scripture. You and your team are making a difference in people’s lives, even all the way over here. I think this is kind of marvelous.” - Antony
Discovery by Providence
Second to being invited by a friend to listen, many discover Relevant Radio through very random circumstances. Rental cars dialed to our AM stations, radios that won’t change away from it, bumper stickers, and impactful segments. The amount of listeners who never intended to stay with our station and now support it, listening every day, is nothing short of miraculous!
“Extremely grateful for all that you do. You are truly helping to bring people back to the Church - turned the radio on to AM by accident and found your station, and I believe that it was truly an act of God.” - Marisella
“I found RR about a month ago when I saw a billboard on the roadway (with a picture of Drew). It’s been life changing. I have more peace and getting to know my faith more.” - Jesus
Visiting the Imprisoned
Relevant Radio has audiences in every environment, from villages and cities to rural towns and Antarctic research stations. But did you know Relevant Radio also reaches many prisons? Former inmate James called into The Patrick Madrid Show to share:
“I was actually introduced to Relevant Radio in prison. I basically had my Catechism, my Bible, and my Relevant Radio. That’s how I was catechized. We didn’t have a lot of volunteers who came in to do that; I got catechized through Relevant Radio, particularly Patrick Madrid, and I was baptized, confirmed, first holy communion all in prison, in big part thanks to Relevant Radio. You are reaching people everywhere.
We had little personal radios, and every time we were out in the yard I was able to pick up your station – one of the only ones I could get. We would go out in the yard on Friday nights and advertise for Relevant Radio to get others to listen to you.
A lot were interested. There was a lot of opposition, a lot of questions, but the ones we could get to listen had a lot of positive feedback. I told the Lord that because he allowed me to be converted, get out, and do good, I’d support as soon as I could. And I thank God that I’m able to do that now.”
JPII Life Center
Pat Von Dohlen, a longtime board member of Relevant Radio, and her husband Tim founded the St. John Paul II Life Center in 2010, inspired by the Pope’s zeal for life at all ages and abilities. Serving residents in Austin, Texas, Relevant Radio helped the Center gain awareness, notoriety, and success in their early years through on-air opportunities.
“Our Catholic faith has been enriched by the content of Relevant Radio programming and using Relevant Radio advertising has advanced the St. John Paul II Life Center and Vitae Clinic in Austin, Texas, to become a beacon of hope for pregnant women who believed they had nowhere to go for help and then they found the Center and received love, respect, education, and medical care giving them support and personal dignity for herself and her baby.”
Catholic Dentistry Finds Support
In the late 1990s, when the Catholic population in Iraq was at less than 10%, Luma Naim and Rod Bahjat immigrated to the United States. Luma joined her father in Michigan in 1997, and Rod, his brother and their parents, escaped a year later and, after obtaining a visa in Jordan, reunited with his extensive family in the same area. Much of their encouragement and joy came from a Catholic radio station they enjoyed in the Detroit area.
Both attended Kaplan Pre-med prep school in Detroit, where they met and began dating; in 2006 they married and moved to the Chicago area in hopes of a more stable life and work. After years of working under dentists, Luma and Rod founded their own independent practice in 2008; the endeavor proved difficult when they didn’t have many patients, but the pair was determined to make it work. They tuned into Relevant Radio for the same encouragement they found in Detroit and took a leap of faith into advertising on the station.
The rewards this advertising reaped were almost immediate; North Shore Dental Group in Park Ridge took off – and when Relevant Radio switched to National Non-Commerical, they evolved into “My Catholic Dentists” to continue their on-air presence and provide dental care Catholics could trust and feel good working with – just like them!
The Shrine of Christ's Passion
The Shrine of Christ’s Passion opened on December 3rd, 2007, in St. John, Indiana and features 40 life-sized bronze sculptures on a twisting half-mile trail with dramatic landscaped gardens depicting the last hours in the life of Christ from the Last Supper to the Ascension, and giving life to the poignant Sanctity of Life Shrine. In the Shrine’s 16 years, its grounds have sculptures of Moses receiving the Ten Commandments, the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and a family for its new Family Plaza, all enhanced with ambient sounds, music and narration.
The Shrine is also home to an exquisite, one of a kind 12,000 sq. ft. Gift Shoppe. Frank and Shirley Schilling are grateful to God for their unique ministry, and welcome more than 200,000 pilgrims per year. As a sponsor of Relevant Radio’s Great Shrines Across America reaching over 4MM listeners every year, The Shrine of Christ’s Passion has a vision for growth and dedicated to becoming one of the most popular Catholic shrines in not only the Midwest, but the entire the US.

Celebrating 25 Years
On December 12th, Relevant Radio marks 25 years of broadcasting hope with a Solemn Mass and Anniversary Gala in downtown Chicago.
2,000 years ago, Jesus assigned us an all-important charge, the Great Commission: “Go forth and make disciples of every nation!” (Matthew 28). The Apostles answered this call, bringing the Good News of Jesus to every corner of the earth they could reach.
On August 15, 1993, at World Youth Day in Denver, Colorado, Pope St. John Paul II brought this mission to the attention of the modern age: “Do not be afraid to go out on the streets and into public places, like the first Apostles who preached Christ and the Good News of salvation in the squares of cities, towns, and villages. This is no time to be ashamed of the Gospel, it is the time to preach it from the rooftops.”

Dec 2000
Wisconsinite John Cavil heard and responded to the Pope’s words of encouragement, as well as a providential nudge from his mother who shared EWTN Mother Angelica’s message: “If you buy a radio station, I will give you the programming for free.” After praying about the decision in a perpetual adoration chapel in Green Bay, he partnered with Catholic businessmen Bob Atwell and Mark Follett and purchased 1050 AM which remains the oldest owned and operated station in the Relevant Radio network today.
Their first broadcast was a live Mass from the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral on November 26, 2000, and just a month later, they received FCC license approval on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose official title is “Star of the First and New Evangelization.” Thus “Christ the King Communications” was born, later becoming “Starboard Network,” and eventually Relevant Radio.

Jan 2003
Relevant Radio began to spread across the Midwest, with stations in Madison, Milwaukee, northwest Indiana, the Twin Cities, and Chicago – followed by a station in Austin, TX. It also moved into the digital space, establishing a Twitter and a Facebook page.
In 2004, the Holy Eucharist was reserved on-site in the Chapel of the Nativity at the Green Bay headquarters along with weekly adoration, thus establishing Our Lord at the center of the Relevant Radio mission.
In 2007, Rev. Francis J. Hoffman “Fr. Rocky,” a 15-year staple on Morning Air turned Senior Vice President, alongside CEO Thomas Vorpahl, penned new guiding principles that further cemented the network’s Christ-centered mission. They are still used today:
1. Faithful to the Magisterium and Catechism of the Catholic Church;
2. United to the Bishops; and
3. Under the protective intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The fresh and engaging programming listeners know today began with the introduction of a call-in show in 2003 called Morning Air, which featured Jeff Cavins, Theresa Tomeo, and John Morales. Morning Air also debuted the name “Relevant Radio,” emphasizing the competitive role Catholic radio would play among modern media.
The Drew Mariani Show would follow in 2004, and seven years later would debut the most listened-to hour in Catholic radio: the interactive Divine Mercy Chaplet, where listeners share their prayers live on the air and lift their intentions to the mercy of God together.
The Inner Life, now hosted by Patrick Conley, came on the air in 2006, featuring spiritual direction and engaging conversations on air with a new priest every day.

During a broadcast of a Marian retreat, Relevant Radio listeners were invited to pray the Memorare for the intention of an end to abortion. The enthusiastic response inspired Relevant Radio to pray the Memorare on air every hour for this intention, with listeners encouraged to add their own to an online counter known as “the Memorare Meter.” Bishops and Cardinals quickly joined in, and today more than sixty continue to lead the devotion on air.
On January 20, 2023, the meter crossed the half billion mark (500 million prayers!) during the 50th annual March for Life – the first since Roe v. Wade was overturned.
The Memorare Meter continues to grow, a living witness to the power of prayer: “Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession was left unaided…”

Approaching its 10th anniversary, the network faced serious financial struggles. Bishop David L. Ricken advised CEO Tom Vorpahl to place a statue of St. Joseph by the door and pray daily. When the situation remained critical, he recommended a pilgrimage to the Oratory of St. Joseph in Montreal – even offering to take them there himself! For three days, the team prayed at Saint André Bessette’s tomb, went to Confession, and placed their hands on St. Joseph’s statue, asking boldly for a miracle.
Their prayers were answered immediately: during the next pledge drive, donations surged, and later that year a major gift arrived. Half went to debt, half to expansion, including the purchase of 550 AM in Providence, which was renamed WSJW – “St. Joseph the Worker” – on his feast day. Since then, growth has multiplied tenfold while debt decreased by 111%. The team returns to Montreal each year to give thanks, confident that St. Joseph continues to guide and protect their mission. Relevant Radio often prays to St. Joseph in times of urgent need – and every time, St. Joseph responds abundantly.

Although Relevant Radio had already dipped its toes into the digital world through various social media platforms and digital archives of content on demand, it truly became nationally – and internationally – present through the launch of its first mobile app. This allowed anyone to listen to the live broadcast anytime, anywhere, offering even more features such as podcasts and on-demand audio prayers.
Since its launch in 2013, the free Relevant Radio app has been downloaded over 1 million times, making it the number one free Catholic app in the world. It has also been downloaded in 170 countries and 29 territories, rendering Relevant Radio truly international, as evidenced by the prayer requests received from around the world.

Mary appeared to Adele Brise in 1859 in Wisconsin, calling her to evangelize the faithful in the region and assuring her, “Go and fear nothing, I will help you.” Bishop Ricken’s investigation led to the apparition’s formal approval in 2010, making it the only recognized Marian apparition in the United States. Drew Mariani and Fr. Rocky covered the approval live, inspiring Fr. Rocky to encourage a walking pilgrimage to the shrine.
Three years later, on May 4, 2013, 300 pilgrims walked 21 miles from the National Shrine of St. Joseph to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. Tom Schmit and Pat Deprey brought the pilgrimage to life, and it has since grown to thousands of joyful participants. In 2023, the shrine was renamed the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion, reflecting its deepened identity and mission.
The Walk to Mary continues to unite pilgrims in Mary’s mission, echoing her message to Adele to teach, evangelize, and fear nothing, guiding Relevant Radio’s mission today.

Relevant Radio’s expansion on the east coast included markets like New York City, the largest station to date. But the mission was national, and the next step was westward. In 2016, Relevant Radio entered talks with Immaculate Heart Radio, a strong west coast Catholic network founded by Doug Sherman.
Just eleven days later, on the feast of Mary, Help of Christians, the FCC approved the merger, which was completed that June. Overnight, Relevant Radio’s potential audience doubled from 60 million to 120 million, funded by the “Coast to Coast” capital campaign that raised $35 million. With this growth came new programming, including the addition of The Patrick Madrid Show on October 16, 2017. The merger not only expanded coverage nationwide but also strengthened Catholic radio’s mission of evangelization from coast to coast.

With millions of souls depending on Relevant Radio for spiritual direction, prayerful community, and accessible Catholic catechesis, the Relevant Radio Board of Directors adopted a simplified mission statement that would clarify their mission and direct their decisions – setting their sights on Bringing Christ to the world through the media.
Bolstered by the “Coast to Coast” campaign, Relevant Radio launched an even more ambitious goal – to bring the Good News “All Across America.” This new capital campaign, which raised $17 million in support, allowed Relevant Radio to purchase twenty AM and FM stations in ten major US cities from Salem Communications, increasing the potential reach to 250 million people in major metropolitan areas and beyond.

As the new decade began, Relevant Radio continued to broaden its reach with fresh voices and new formats. Timmerie Geagea brought faithful insight into culture and everyday life through her show Trending with Timmerie, while Relevant Radio began producing original video series like Lenten Lessons on the Mass with Fr. Rocky, which quickly became a beloved annual tradition for hundreds of thousands of viewers.
But perhaps the boldest leap came with the launch of an entertainment division: The Merry Beggars. Their debut production, Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, brought professional Catholic storytelling to a global audience, peaking at #3 on Apple Podcasts in 2021. With world-class talent both onstage and behind the scenes, The Merry Beggars produced imaginative, faith-filled audio entertainment, surpassing 1 million downloads by 2022. This season of growth cemented Relevant Radio as a truly multi-platform Catholic media network, offering inspiration and creativity across radio, video, and entertainment.

With churches closed and a global crisis affecting the lives of people across the nation and world, Relevant Radio was a beacon of hope during the COVID-19 quarantine, offering 24/7 uplifting content and continuing to spread the Good News when good news was scarce. Thousands of listeners participated in a prayer campaign for an end to the pandemic.
Daily live broadcasts of the Mass allowed listeners to offer a spiritual communion when they couldn’t attend in person, and the Family Rosary Across America, which had debuted just two years before, became essential programming for many looking for a hopeful community of prayers in a time of crisis. Relevant Radio offered these broadcasts not only on air but, for the first time, live on video too.
This light in pandemic darkness attracted an audience that grew by 40%, and the Family Rosary Across America continues to be one of the most popular live and interactive shows on Relevant Radio.

A new headquarters would also allow for further advancements on new platforms, increased collaborative creativity, and encourage new outlooks for the future.
On a cold day in February of 2021, the building is officially blessed and the first associates move in. After months of construction, Patrick Madrid goes live from the Kay Birck Global Media Center’s brand-new broadcasting studios on September 9, 2022.

Relevant Radio will not rest until every soul in America that needs to hear the Good News is reached. Inspired by the Good Shepherd – “If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes astray, will he not leave the ninety-nine in the hills and go in search of the stray?” – Relevant Radio seeks the lost sheep of America with the newly launched "Go the Distance" campaign.
Already reaching new markets like Baltimore, Seattle, Detroit, Tucson, Honolulu, and Toledo, the "Go the Distance" campaign aims to reach all the top 100 metro markets in America. In the words of Fr. Rocky, “Our sense of urgency is driven by what’s at stake: the salvation of souls.”
Relevant Radio continues to be a beacon of light in the darkness, carrying the Good News of the Gospel as a torch throughout the nation and the world and looks forward with hope to all the things to come.
